Closing the Gap in Telemetry: Integrating Satellite (UBILINK) and Citizen Science (INTELINK) Networks
The rapid evolution of digital technology is fundamentally restructuring how we collect and interpret ecological data. Beyond simple data points, we are entering the era of Digital Symbiosis Network where human society and wildlife are digitally interconnected. This network aims to digitize biological information across several scales, creating a pervasive infrastructure accessible anytime and anywhere. To realize this vision, we integrate three distinct communication tiers: cellular networks, INTELINK, and UBILINK. Within this architecture, UBILINK acts as a global satellite backbone, providing a reliable solution for continuous tracking in remote or pelagic habitats where terrestrial infrastructure is absent. INTELINK provides the essential near-field connectivity, covering a spectrum of scenarios from short-range interactions to long-range (LR) telemetry in wild habitats. A key implementation of this symbiosis in human-inhabited areas is IntelinkGO, a platform for public engagement which transforms the everyday presence of people into a collaborative monitoring force, allowing local communities to participate directly in the digitization of ecological data, bridging the gap between human activity and wildlife conservation through shared participation. The true strength of this ecosystem lies in its open architecture. Rather than operating as an isolated system, INTELINK is designed for broad interoperability, seamlessly integrating with diverse third-party devices and monitoring modalities. This facilitating of data fluidity allows different streams—from satellite trajectories to multi-dimensional data, e.g. audio, video, environment, to mutually supplement one another. Ultimately, this collaborative exchange upgrades the ecological monitoring paradigm, offering a highly scalable, interconnected framework for the future of global biodiversity research.
